An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck the Herzegovina region on Friday, April 22, 2022, in the late evening (23:08). The epicenter was located between Stolac and Ljubinje, about 40 km from Mostar, with a hypocenter depth of 5 km. The earthquake was felt across much of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dalmatia, and Montenegro. It was followed by over 50 aftershocks of lesser intensity, including one with a magnitude of 5.5. One person died, and several others sustained minor injuries. Tragically, a young woman who was found buried after a part of a hill collapsed onto her house passed away. Most of the injured were hurt by falling objects inside their homes but did not suffer serious injuries. In the Berkovići municipality, material damage occurred to older buildings, and landslides affected the roads. In Stolac, parts of plaster and stones fell from building facades onto the streets. There was a power outage in the municipality, but the fault was quickly repaired. In Ljubinje, roof and chimney damage was reported. In Mostar, bricks and roof tiles fell onto the streets, and some areas experienced power outages. Given the epicenter’s location, no major material damage was recorded; the earthquake mainly caused panic and fear among residents of the epicentral area.
