A strong earthquake with a magnitude of M 7.5, at a depth of about 10 km, struck the Sulawesi region in Indonesia on September 28, 2018. The fault-affected area is estimated to be approximately 120 x 12 km, while the earthquake intensity according to the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale is around IX degrees. This region is prone to frequent and strong earthquakes.
In the past 100 years, more than fifteen earthquakes with magnitudes greater than M 6.5 have occurred, the strongest of which took place in January 1966, 100 km to the north, with a magnitude of M 7.9. Incomplete data indicate over 800 fatalities and extensive destruction, partly due to triggered tsunami waves ranging from about 1.6 to 6.0 meters in height.
