The association "IZGRADNJA" is organizing a free lecture by Prof. Dr Mihailo Trifunac, Dipl. Civil Engineer, on the topic "Response Spectra from Earthquakes on Bridges and Long Structures." The lecture will be held on August 16, 2019, in Belgrade, at Knez Miloša Street 9, in the hall on the third floor, starting at 9:30 AM. Participant registration is from 9:00 to 9:30 AM. This selected lecture is part of the 14th scientific-professional gathering "Management and Rehabilitation of Bridges," which will take place on October 18, 2019, in Belgrade.
About the lecturer:
Professor Trifunac is one of the world’s leading experts in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. He engages in both theoretical and experimental work on a wide range of topics, including: the earthquake source mechanism, empirical scaling of strong ground motion, development of strong motion observation and recording networks, effects of seismic wave propagation and local site conditions on strong ground motion, seismic hazard assessment, structural dynamics and soil-structure interaction, full-scale structural testing, seismic instrumentation and data processing, seismic response statistics, and tsunami research. He is the author or co-author of nearly 400 technical publications, and his work is frequently cited.
Prof. Trifunac graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade in 1965. He earned his master's degree at Princeton University in 1966. He joined the University of Southern California (USC) in 1976. Prior to USC, he spent three years at the California Institute of Technology (1972–1975) as an Assistant Professor of Applied Science, two years at the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University first as a Research Scientist and then as an Associate Research Scientist and Lecturer in the Geology Department (1970–1972), and one year at Caltech as a Research Associate in Applied Mechanics (1969–1970), where he also earned his Ph.D. in 1969. He later served as a J.S.P.S. Research Professor at the School of Civil Engineering at Kyoto University (1988/89) in Japan, and worked as a consultant to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on its Reactor Safety Advisory Committees (1971–1994) and Nuclear Waste Advisory Committee (1989–1994).
He is a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Seismological Society of America (SSA), Sigma Xi, Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), Indian Society of Earthquake Technology (ISET), and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the Serbian Engineering Academy, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering, and an honorary member of the Indian Society of Earthquake Technology. He received the Kapitsa Gold Medal for Scientific Discovery in 2002 from the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, the Lockheed Martin Senior Research Award in 2000 for pioneering contributions in earthquake engineering and seismology from USC, the ISET Award for Earthquake Technology in 1989 for the best paper of the year, and the Hanumatacharya Joshi Award in 1991 for the best paper in structural dynamics. He was selected among the top 20 authors worldwide on the special topic of earthquakes for the period 1993–2003 (one of only two earthquake engineers on the list), and among the top 1% of authors worldwide in engineering for the period 1995–2005 by the Institute for Scientific Information (Thompson ISI).
