Given the significance of the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023 (magnitudes 7.8 and 7.5), the SAEE leadership decided to form an expert team to visit the affected areas and document the earthquake’s impact on buildings and infrastructure, as well as recovery programs for these regions after the earthquakes. The team is currently in Turkey, where they will stay from March 16 to March 21, 2023. They plan to visit the affected Turkish provinces of Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, and Hatay. This mission is led on behalf of SAEE by Associate Professor Dr Marko Marinković (Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade), with team members Dr Nikola Blagojević (ETH Zurich) and Nemanja Krtinić (doctoral student at the University of Ljubljana). This is a joint effort between SAEE and ETH Zurich. The ETH team members include Prof. Michalis Vassiliou and Safak Arslantürkoglu (PhD candidate). The team will visit the affected areas accompanied by local engineers from AFAD (Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority).
After the visit to Turkey, a seminar will be held where team members will present information and observations regarding the effects of these earthquakes on buildings and infrastructure. This seminar will be of importance to SUZI members as well as the professional public in Serbia. The date of the seminar will be announced later.
