Seminar held on the topic "Consequences of the Earthquake in Albania on November 26, 2019, on Buildings and Infrastructure"

Organized by SAEE and the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, a seminar was held on March 2, 2020, on the topic “Consequences of the Earthquake in Albania on November 26, 2019, on Buildings and Infrastructure.” The seminar was attended by over 80 members of SAEE, civil engineers, and students.

Abstract

The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Albania on November 26, 2019, at 3:54 AM. The epicenter was located 22 km from the city of Durrës and 30 km from the capital, Tirana. According to official reports, the earthquake caused 51 deaths and injured 913 people. It caused significant damage to buildings such as multi-story residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and hotels. The total damage is estimated at around 985 million euros, with the residential sector suffering the greatest losses (78% of the total amount): 11,490 residential units collapsed, and an additional 83,745 units were damaged. A team from the Serbian Association for Earthquake Engineering (SAEE) visited the affected areas between December 27 and 30, 2019, including several villages and five cities: Tirana, Durrës, Krujë, Fushë-Krujë, and Thumane. At the seminar, observations from the SAEE team members regarding buildings important for construction practice in Serbia were presented. The seminar topics included a brief description of the earthquake and its consequences, including seismological aspects; an overview of Albanian regulations for seismic design and construction methods for family and residential buildings. One of the key topics was the behavior of reinforced concrete frame structures with masonry infill, which suffered significant damage. The behavior of masonry buildings during this earthquake was also discussed, as this topic is relevant to our construction practice. The final topic was a discussion on the behavior of infrastructure systems, post-earthquake activities, and reconstruction plans.
