Online Seminar on "Seismic Risk: Definition and Assessment" held
01.09.2021

The online seminar organized by SAEE on the topic "Seismic Risk: Definition and Assessment" was held on September 15, 2021, from 16:00 to 18:00 via the Zoom platform. The lecturers were Jovana Borozan, Dr Svetlana Brzev, and Dr Borko Bulajić.

The lecturers covered topics related to seismic risk, definitions, and methodologies for risk assessment, as well as an overview of existing activities regarding seismic risk assessment in Serbia. They also described SAEE’s activities related to the development of exposure models in Serbia, including types of residential buildings and their behavior during earthquakes, assessment of the housing stock structure, and SAEE’s work on developing this model. Current methods for seismic risk assessment were briefly presented during the seminar.

Below are brief biographies of the lecturers, presentation slides, and a video recording of the seminar.

Speaker Biography

Prof. Dr Svetlana Nikolić-Brzev has over 30 years of international professional experience related to seismic analysis, design, and strengthening of reinforced concrete and masonry structures. Since 2017, she has been an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Previously, she taught for 16 years at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and worked for Sandwell Engineering in Vancouver on seismic retrofit projects for public buildings in Canada and other countries. She began her professional career as a researcher at the Institute for Materials Testing in Serbia (IMS) from 1985 to 1993. Dr. Brzev is a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Technical Committee for masonry design standards (CSA S304) and a member of the technical committee developing seismic design regulations for masonry structures for the new generation of Eurocode 8. She has published over 100 scientific and professional papers and co-authored three textbooks on masonry and reinforced concrete structures used in Canada. She graduated and earned her master’s degree at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade (1984 and 1989), and earned her Ph.D. in earthquake engineering at the University of Roorkee, India (1994).

Dr Borko Bulajić has nearly 20 years of experience in seismic hazard assessment and earthquake engineering. From 2014 to 2019, he was an Assistant Professor, and since 2019, an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad. As part of an international expert team, he contributed to seismic microzonation studies for larger areas of several Balkan cities as well as regions in India. Prof. Bulajić has authored about 80 scientific and professional papers and textbooks on seismic hazard analysis. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade in 2001, earned his master’s degree at the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) in Skopje in 2004, and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Novi Sad in 2013. Since 2007 he has been a member, and since 2016 the president, of the Association of Civil Engineers, Geotechnics, Architecture, and Urbanists "Izgradnja." Alongside his research, he has worked professionally for nearly 20 years, including a permanent position at the Institute for Roads AD Belgrade from 2006 to 2014, where he supervised construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of bridges and other road structures and was involved in structural design. He has been a member of the Serbian Chamber of Engineers since 2008 and holds a license from the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia for disaster risk assessment and protection and rescue planning.

Jovana Borozan works as an independent consultant on seismic hazard and earthquake engineering projects in Toronto. After completing her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade, she pursued a master’s degree in earthquake engineering and seismology in Pavia, Italy, with her thesis completed in Porto, Portugal, focusing on the impact of soil liquefaction on low-rise buildings. She worked as a consultant in Italy on a project assessing the impacts of small/medium magnitude earthquakes on the environment, buildings, people, and the economy, which served as a basis for earthquake risk assessment related to gas extraction in Groningen, Netherlands. Before moving to Canada, Jovana was employed as a civil engineer at the Office for Public Investment Management in Belgrade. She has been a member of the Serbian Association for Earthquake Engineering (SAEE) since 2019, serving as technical secretary and contributing to the development of seismic exposure models for residential buildings in Serbia.
