The online SAEE lecture titled "Seismic Hazard and Determination of Seismic Action in Accordance with Eurocode 8" was held on June 9, 2021, at 16:00 via the Zoom platform. The lecturer was Associate Professor Dr Borko Bulajić, M.Sc. Civil Engineering, from the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad. Approximately 40 participants attended the lecture.
Below are the abstract of the lecture, the biography of Prof. Bulajić, and the video recording of the lecture.
Abstract
The aim of the lecture is primarily to familiarize graduate civil engineers in the Republic of Serbia and the region with the procedure for determining seismic action in accordance with Eurocode 8. It explains the meaning of various concepts related to seismic hazard as well as possible sources of uncertainty in input data for structural design (design spectra, design accelerograms, peak ground acceleration values, etc.). The lecture covers explanations of some fundamental concepts related to seismic hazard assessment (such as return periods, probabilities, seismic source zones, attenuation relationships, soil types, uniform hazard spectra, seismic hazard deaggregation, seismic microzonation, etc.). Additionally, it analyzes how design spectra and design accelerograms are defined in Eurocode 8, discussing both the current Eurocode 8 (2004 version) and the expected upcoming changes that will significantly affect the calculation of design spectra and accelerograms.
This is the first in a series of SAEE lectures specifically intended for practicing engineers, as well as other interested SAEE members.
Speaker Biography
Dr Borko Bulajić has nearly 20 years of experience in seismic hazard assessment and earthquake engineering. From 2014 to 2019, he served as assistant professor, and since 2019, as associate professor at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad, where he teaches courses on Hazards, Risk Analysis Methods, Earthquake Effects on Structures, Basics of Structural Design, and the Role and Importance of Prevention in Risk Reduction. As a member of an international expert team, he has contributed to seismic microzonation studies for wide areas of several Balkan cities (Banja Luka, Kraljevo, Belgrade, Skopje, Štip, Kraljevo, and Novi Sad), as well as for regions in Guwahati (Assam) and New Delhi, India. Prof. Bulajić is the author of around 80 scientific and professional papers and textbooks on seismic hazard analysis. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade (1996–2001), earned his master's degree at the Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology Institute (IZIIS) in Skopje (2002–2004), and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Novi Sad (2010–2013). Since 2007, he has been a member, and since 2016, the president of the Association of Civil Engineering, Geotechnics, Architecture, and Urbanism "Izgradnja." He has served as a court expert in the field of civil engineering since 2014. Alongside his academic and research career, Dr. Bulajić has almost 20 years of professional experience. From 2006 to 2014, he was employed at the Roads Institute in Belgrade, primarily supervising the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of bridges and other road structures, as well as designing various structural types. He has been a member of the Serbian Chamber of Engineers since 2008 and holds a license from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia for disaster risk assessment and emergency response planning.
