On December 29, 2020, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred near Petrinja, Croatia. This was the strongest earthquake to hit Croatia in the last 140 years, causing human casualties and significant material damage in the areas of Petrinja, Glina, Sisak, and even Zagreb. The earthquake resulted in damage and, in some cases, the collapse of residential buildings, schools, hospitals, churches, and other structures.
Given the importance of this earthquake for Serbia, in terms of construction practice and technical regulations, the leadership of the Serbian Association for Earthquake Engineering (SAEE) decided to organize a professional team to visit the affected areas from February 1 to February 5, 2021. The team members were Dr Marko Marinković (team leader, structures), Dr Željko Žugić (geotechnical engineering), and Petar Bursać (use of drones for damage inspection). The aim of this mission was to document the earthquake’s impact on buildings and infrastructure to inform SAEE members and the professional community in Serbia.
The visit was organized in cooperation with colleagues from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb, and the gold sponsor was Sika Serbia d.o.o.
