Lecture "Numerical Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction under Earthquake Loading" by Prof. Dr Boris Jeremić

The first online lecture organized by SAEE was held on April 23, 2020, via the Zoom platform. Prof. Dr Boris Jeremić, Civil Engineer, from the University of California, Davis, USA, gave a lecture on the topic: "Numerical Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction under Earthquake Loading." The lecture was attended by 100 SAEE members and other interested colleagues. After the lecture, an engaging discussion with Prof. Jeremić followed.


Abstract


Numerical analysis of structures and soil has been used in practice for several decades. Numerical models for soil and structures can range from relatively simple to highly complex. It is important to determine the appropriate level of detail in a model to make it useful for design or structural condition assessment. The lecture focused on analyzing the relationship between simplified and complex models of soil, structures, and their interaction. It was demonstrated that certain simplifications in modeling can be detrimental and obscure the true behavior of the soil-structure system. Analyses using simplified models can lead to unrealistically increased or decreased safety levels for structures subjected to seismic loading, significantly affecting construction costs. During the lecture, examples of soil-structure interaction analyses performed using the Real-ESSI Simulator were presented. The impact of simplified models on result accuracy was explained, along with examples of verification and validation of the Real-ESSI Simulator. The Real-ESSI Simulator program and the presented examples are available on the website: http://real-essi.us.


Speaker Biography


Prof. Boris Jeremić received his Ph.D. in 1997 and his M.S. in 1994 from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1989 from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade. From 1989 to 1992, he worked at Energoprojekt-Hydroengineering in Belgrade and Iraq. Prof. Jeremić specializes in the development and application of deterministic and probabilistic methods for soil, structure, and soil-structure interaction analysis, as well as the development of the Real-ESSI Simulator system ( http://real-essi.us ), used in the design and assessment of bridges, buildings, dams, tunnels, and nuclear power plants. His scientific publications and books are available on his webpage: http://sokocalo.engr.ucdavis.edu/~jeremic/ . At the University of California, Prof. Jeremić teaches statics, strength of materials, linear and nonlinear finite elements, and numerical analysis of soil-structure interaction under earthquakes.
