Lecture "Causes of Building Damage Due to Recent Earthquakes in Turkey – Lessons for Construction Practice in Serbia" by Asst. Prof. Dr Marko Marinković

On Friday, June 16, 2023, in the Ceremony Hall at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade, as part of the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the SUZI (SAEE) association, a lecture was held titled: "Causes of Building Damage Due to Recent Earthquakes in Turkey – Lessons for Construction Practice in Serbia."

The lecturer was Dr Marko Marinković, assistant professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade and a member of the SUZI association’s board of directors.


The sponsor of this lecture was the company Sika d.o.o. Serbia.

After the lecture, representatives of the company Sika gave a short presentation about their products and technologies for repair and strengthening of structures before/after earthquakes.

Abstract


A series of strong earthquakes that occurred in Turkey in February 2023 caused a large loss of life and significant damage to buildings. Some of the information gathered on-site during the study visit by SAEE members was presented in this lecture, with a review of the state of construction practice in Serbia and lessons drawn for all participants involved in the building process in Serbia.

Besides the seismological aspects of the earthquake events, data were shown on the construction “boom” in Turkey over the past 20 years, during which about 50% of the building stock in the hardest-hit provinces was constructed. Examples of buildings in locations visited by the SAEE team were then presented. For each building site, the response spectrum of the earthquake recorded at the nearest measuring station was provided.

The most significant damages were shown for each building, accompanied by commentary on the causes of those damages and what could have been done differently. Examples of typical structural systems in Turkey were compared with similar systems from Serbia. Causes of damage to both structural and non-structural elements were also discussed, illustrated with similar examples from buildings in Serbia.

Documented cases of good performance of base-isolated hospitals in Turkey were presented, noting that this is one way to enhance the safety of important buildings. The presentation concluded with a summary of the most common types of damage and their causes. The presentation ended with great gratitude to all individuals and institutions that enabled the SAEE members’ visit to Turkey, as well as to all sponsors of this activity.


Speaker Biography


Asst. Prof. Dr Marko Marinković is the chairman of the Commitee for Earthquake Field Studies of the Serbian Association for Earthquake Engineering (SAEE), a member of the SAEE management board, and an assistant professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade. His scientific and professional work focuses on the seismic analysis of structures, including reinforced concrete, masonry, and steel structures. He is responsible for teaching courses in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering at the Department of Technical Mechanics and Structural Theory at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade. Additionally, he is a member of the CEN/TC 250 working group SC8/TG3, established by the European Commission to prepare the new generation of Eurocodes.
