Online Seminar organized by SAEE held on “Condition and Design of Masonry Building Structures”

The online seminar on the topic “Condition and Design of Masonry Building Structures” was held under the organization of SAEE on November 19, 2020, with 49 participants attending from Serbia, Croatia, Canada, Switzerland, and the USA. The lecturers were renowned experts in the field: Prof. Dr Svetlana Nikolić-Brzev, University of British Columbia, Canada; Dr Predrag Blagojević and Assistant Professor Dr Radovan Cvetković, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Niš.


Masonry building structures constitute the largest portion of the building stock in Serbia; therefore, proper design and construction of such structures are crucial for their safety in the event of an earthquake. The goal of this seminar was to present the current state of masonry building structures in Serbia, including both individual residential buildings and collective housing structures. One of the introductory topics was the strengthening and extension of masonry structures, a frequent practice in urban centers of Serbia. Dr Blagojević described the most common misconceptions and errors made by designers and builders in modern masonry construction practice in Serbia. The seminar also covered the development of regulations related to masonry structures over the last 60 years. Dr Nikolić-Brzev explained the failure mechanisms of these structures under seismic loads, focusing on the assessment of strength and load-bearing capacity of masonry structural elements. Dr Cvetković presented comparative analysis results of a multi-story masonry structure with reinforced concrete ties under seismic loading, considering both current national regulations and Eurocodes 6 and 8. The seminar concluded with a discussion led by SAEE Vice President Vanja Alendar and other participants.
