Lecture "Design of Seismically Resistant Bridges According to the Eurocode 8-2 Standard" by Dr Tatjana Isaković

On Wednesday, September 27, 2023, from 16:00 to 17:30, a virtual lecture was held in Serbian via the Zoom platform titled: "Design of Seismically Resistant Bridges According to the Eurocode 8-2 Standard."

The lecturer was Prof. Dr Tatjana Isaković from the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana.

Abstract


The seismic response of bridges significantly differs from that of buildings, primarily due to their different structural configurations and often much larger dimensions and more complex geometric characteristics of the cross-sections of load-bearing elements. Therefore, the design of seismically resistant bridges must be governed by specific regulations. One such regulation is the Eurocode 8-2 (EC8-2) standard, which is intended for the design of new bridges.

Designing according to EC8-2 differs from earlier codes, particularly in terms of: explicit reduction of seismic forces and the initial stiffness of the structure, consistent application of the capacity design method at both global and local levels, and specific detailing provisions aimed at preventing brittle failure due to inadequate confinement of the concrete cross-section and buckling of longitudinal reinforcement in the critical zones of load-bearing elements.

This lecture is therefore primarily dedicated to these requirements of the standard, which are thoroughly demonstrated through a concrete bridge design example according to EC8-2—prepared as an appendix.

The second part of the lecture focuses on older existing bridges. It summarizes the standard techniques used to retrofit older bridges and presents a concrete example of a bridge strengthening intervention.


Speaker Biography


Prof. Dr Tatjana Isaković is a full professor at the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana. She is the Head of the Chair of Structures and Earthquake Engineering at the same faculty. Her research focuses on the seismic response of reinforced concrete structures: bridges, precast structures, and various types of buildings.

The results of her research in the field of precast structures have recently been included in two ISO standards for the design of this type of construction, while her findings on the seismic response of bridges and buildings with reinforced concrete walls have significantly influenced the requirements of the second generation of the Eurocode 8 standard, which is currently under development.

Tatjana Isaković is the author of over 200 articles published in scientific and professional journals and conference proceedings, as well as more than 20 book chapters in scientific monographs. She has also presented her work through various lectures at universities across Europe (Italy, Belgium, Serbia, Croatia, Germany, the United Kingdom), as well as in the USA, Mexico, and New Zealand.

She is a member of the WG11 working group “Seismic Analysis and Design of Bridges”, which operates under the European Association for Earthquake Engineering (EAEE), and of the International Wall Institute, an international association bringing together leading researchers in the field of seismic response of reinforced concrete walls.
