Online Seminar held on the topic “Seismic-resistant Design of Masonry Building Structures”

Online seminar organized by SUZI on the topic “Seismic-Resistant Design of Masonry Building Structures” was held on November 25, 2021, from 16:00 to 17:30 via the Zoom platform. About 45 participants attended the seminar. The speakers were esteemed experts in the field: Prof. Dr Svetlana Nikolić-Brzev, Dr Predrag Blagojević, and Dr Radovan Cvetković. Their biographies are provided below.


Abstract


Masonry building structures constitute the largest part of the building stock in Serbia, and proper design of such structures is of great importance for their safety and durability. The goal of this seminar was to present an overview of methods for designing new masonry building structures, primarily those with ring beams. The speakers presented the main requirements of Eurocode 8 related to masonry buildings, including individual residential buildings and multi-family housing. A practical approach to modeling and seismic analysis of these buildings was explained and illustrated. Additionally, the approach for checking the load-bearing capacity of structural elements in masonry buildings was also explained. This seminar was primarily intended for practicing engineers, as well as other interested colleagues.

Speaker Biography


Prof Dr Svetlana Nikolić-Brzev, civil engineer, has over 30 years of international professional experience related to seismic analysis, design, and strengthening of reinforced concrete and masonry structures. Since 2017, she has been an associate professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada), teaching courses in masonry structure design. Previously, she taught for 16 years at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), and before that, she worked for Sandwell Engineering in Vancouver on seismic retrofit projects of public buildings in Canada and other countries. She started her professional career as a researcher at the Institute for Material Testing of Serbia (IMS) (1985–1993). Dr Brzev is a member of the Technical Committee for the preparation of Canadian standards for masonry design (CSA S304) and a member of the Technical Committee for developing seismic design regulations for masonry structures in the new generation of Eurocode 8. She has published more than 100 scientific and professional papers and coauthored three textbooks on masonry and reinforced concrete structures used in Canada. She graduated and obtained her master's degree at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade (1984 and 1989), and earned her PhD in earthquake engineering at the University of Roorkee, India (1994). Dr Brzev has been president of SAEE since 2018.


Dr Predrag Blagojević, civil engineer, has been working at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Niš, since 1987, teaching courses in the specialized field of concrete structures. He conducted experimental research on micro-reinforced concrete at Aston University in Birmingham, UK, during his master’s (1996) and doctoral (2012) theses. In his professional career, he has been involved in construction, supervision, and design of building structures. From 1982 to 1987, he worked on the construction of several dozen buildings throughout Serbia, mainly in Belgrade in the neighborhoods “Golf 1-7” on Čukarica slope and “Makiš.” Since 1996, he has cooperated with companies from the Russian Federation and former republics (Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Armenia) as well as various firms in Africa and Europe (Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Germany, Denmark). To date, he has designed around 400 constructed structural projects: residential and residential-commercial buildings (250+), hydraulic structures (55+), bridges (20+), and others (churches, industrial, sports facilities, monuments, etc. (75+)). He received the Award for the best achievement in structural engineering in Serbia for 2004–2005 for the project of repair, reconstruction, adaptation, and extension of the structure of the “Ušće” business center in New Belgrade, after the 1999 bombing. Dr Blagojević is a member of the SAEE Board since 2018.


Dr Radovan Cvetković, civil engineer, is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Niš, at the Department of Materials and Structures. He obtained his master’s degree in 2002 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, and his PhD in 2017 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Niš. Dr Cvetković’s scientific and professional work is related to timber and masonry structures, composite timber-concrete structures, and timber bridges. He is a member of the Standardization Commission of the Republic of Serbia in the field of timber and masonry structures. He is the author of over 80 papers published in national and international journals and an active participant at international and domestic conferences related to structural engineering. He has authored numerous professional projects in the field of repair and reconstruction of structures of various types and several projects of concrete, steel, and timber structures.
