Online seminar organized by SAEE on the topic “Repair and Seismic Strengthening of Masonry Building Structures” was held on February 22, 2022, from 15:00 to 17:00 via the Zoom platform. About 40 participants attended the seminar. Prof. Dr Svetlana Nikolić-Brzev from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and Dr Predrag Blagojević, M.Sc. Civil Engineer, from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Niš, were the speakers.
The seminar was sponsored by SIKA Serbia d.o.o., whose representative Miljan Milanović, M.Sc. Civil Engineer, presented the company’s products and technologies applicable for strengthening masonry structures.

Abstract
The aim of this seminar was to present an overview of approaches for seismic strengthening of masonry building structures, including criteria and goals of strengthening, design of strengthening measures, and verification of the load-bearing capacity of strengthened structures. During the seminar, some well-known strengthening techniques were presented, such as reinforced concrete jackets and modern strengthening technologies using composite materials (e.g., carbon fiber strips). The calculation procedure and an example of strengthening masonry building structures according to domestic technical regulations were explained in detail, using the example of a building damaged during the 2010 earthquake in Kraljevo.

Speaker Biography
Prof. Dr Svetlana Nikolić-Brzev has over 30 years of international professional experience related to seismic analysis, design, and strengthening of reinforced concrete and masonry structures. Since 2017, she has been an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Canada), teaching courses on masonry structure design. Previously, she taught for 16 years at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) and worked for Sandwell Engineering in Vancouver on seismic strengthening projects for public buildings in Canada and other countries. She started her professional career as a researcher at the Institute for Material Testing of Serbia (IMS) (1985–1993). Dr Brzev is a member of the Technical Committee for the development of masonry design standards in Canada (CSA S304) and also part of the Technical Committee for the development of seismic design regulations for masonry structures in the new generation of Eurocode 8. She has published over 100 scientific and professional papers and is co-author of three textbooks on masonry and reinforced concrete structures used in Canada. She graduated and earned her master’s degree at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade (1984 and 1989) and received her PhD in earthquake engineering from the University of Roorkee, India (1994). Dr Brzev has been the president of SAEE since its founding in 2018.
Dr Predrag Blagojević has worked at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Niš, since 1987, teaching subjects in the narrower scientific field of Concrete Structures. He conducted experimental research on fiber-reinforced concrete at Aston University in Birmingham, UK (1992) within his master’s (1996) and doctoral thesis (2012). His professional career includes construction, supervision, and design of building structures. From 1982 to 1987, he worked on constructing several dozen buildings across Serbia, mainly in Belgrade neighborhoods “Golf 1-7” on Čukarička padina and “Makiš.” Since 1996, he has collaborated with companies from the Russian Federation and former republics (Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Armenia) as well as various firms active in Africa and Europe (Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Germany, Denmark). So far, he has designed around 400 constructed structures: residential and residential-commercial (250+), hydraulic (55+), bridges (20+), and others (churches, industrial, sports facilities, monuments, etc. (75+)). He received the Award for the Best Achievement in Structural Engineering in Serbia for 2004-2005 for the project of repair, reconstruction, adaptation, and extension of the Ušće Business Center structure in New Belgrade after the 1999 bombing. Dr Blagojević has been a member of the SAEE Management Board since its founding in 2018.
Miljan Milanović, M.Sc. Civil Engineer, was born in Ljubovija and grew up in Bratunac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade in 2017, specializing in Structures. Since 2019, he has worked at Sika Serbia as a Technical-Commercial Representative in the Sector for Repair and Protection of Structures.
